The chat platform TalkCambridge has banned chatrooms due to an outbreak of suicide and self-harm among young people.
The chat, which launched last month, was shut down due to the outbreak.
“There’s nothing to say that there’s no connection between ChatCambridge and suicide,” TalkCambridges CEO Andrew Faulds said.
“TalkCambridge’s not the first platform to have an outbreak and it won’t be the last.”
Mr FauldS said he believed there was a link between the chat and suicide.
“We think there’s something going on there that we’re not aware of,” he said.
The ChatCam platform is owned by Yahoo.
“In an ideal world, we would have this technology out there in the hands of every Australian and I’m very hopeful that we’ll see that in a very short time,” Mr Foulds said of the chat ban.
“I’m hopeful that it’s not too late.”
Mr Kaldas said the ChatCam network was a service to all Australians.
“If we’re really going to tackle this epidemic, we need to have a platform where we can talk to people, we can see each other, we have a conversation,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne’s Talkback program.
Mr Kallas said ChatCam was also providing support for young people who may be struggling with mental health issues.
“It’s not just the chat that’s been banned, it’s also mental health support that has been provided for young Australians, particularly people with a disability, as well,” he explained.
“ChatCam has been very, very helpful to young Australians.”
ChatCam is now available to those who have access to the app and has also started accepting applications for staff.
Mr Falds said ChatCamp, the other chat platform, had received positive feedback.
“The chat platform has been a great success and we’re proud to have the support of the community,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen a bit of a decline in the number of suicides in ChatCam, but we’re working to address that.”
A ‘snowball effect’ could affect chat platform as chat users grow more connected and more suicidal The ABC spoke to ChatCam’s chief executive, Andy Kaldos, who said the chat platform had received “snowballs” of interest from individuals and businesses.
“When you think about it, the only people who can connect with each other are people that have a personal connection, which means they’ve got a relationship, and those people are going to have more and more people that connect with them,” Mr Kydos said.
